Rural Areas Electricity Company (Tanweer) is an Omani registered shareholding company registered under the Commercial Companies Law of the Sultanate of Oman. Tanweer is the only company in the electricity sector in Oman undertaking 5 licenses, Generation, Transmission, Distributes, supplies electricity to customers and Desalinated activities in its authorized areas in accordance with the license granted by the by Authority for Public Services Regulation. Which is a vertical integration business
The Company commenced its operations on May 1, 2005, following the implementation of a decision of the Ministry of National Economy issued pursuant to Regulation and Privatization of the Electricity and Related Water Sector law promulgated by Royal Decree 78/2004.
Tanweer is wholly owned by the Electricity Holding Company "Nama Group" , which is also owned by the Ministry of Finance. Tanweer offers its services in the authorized areas of Musandam, Al Wusta, Dhofar (excluding DPC concession areas) and parts of the Dakhilia governorates, which are located in South East. The Company also purchases energy (based on power purchase agreements) ) From Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, PDO and Bahwan Umvik (developer of Al Mazyunah Solar Project). Our water desalination plants are located in Duqm, Masirah, Abu Mudhaibi, Suqra, Kumzar, Tanweer sells the amount of desalinated water in bulk to PAEW as per the water sales tariff (The Bulk Supply Tariff (BST) is approved by the Authority for Public Services Regulation
